A safety check is a voluntary inspection. It does not replace the annual MOT test required by law.
What is a vehicle safety check?

A thorough look at the things that keep you safe on the road.

A vehicle safety check is a visual, multi-point inspection carried out by a qualified technician. It covers the key safety systems on your car: brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, fluid levels, battery and wipers. The technician works through a structured checklist, notes down anything that needs attention, and hands you a written report at the end. No parts are replaced and nothing is stripped down unless you give the go-ahead separately.

It is not a legal requirement and it is not a substitute for an annual MOT test. The MOT is a statutory roadworthiness check that your car must pass every year once it turns three years old. A safety check, by contrast, is something you book voluntarily when you want a professional pair of eyes on the car between MOTs, before a big trip, or ahead of buying a used vehicle. Think of it as a health screening rather than a diagnosis.

It also differs from a car service. A service is scheduled maintenance where oil, filters and fluids are actually replaced. A safety check is purely observational. Many garages include a basic safety check as part of a full service, but if you just want the inspection without the maintenance, a standalone safety check is the faster and cheaper option.

What's inspected

Eight areas. One clear report.

A standard vehicle safety check covers the items below. The exact number of check points varies by garage (some run 20-point checks, others go up to 50), but these eight categories form the core of every reputable inspection.

Brakes

Pad and disc thickness, brake fluid level and condition, handbrake operation, and a check for uneven wear or binding calipers. Brakes that feel soft, pull to one side, or squeal under load are flagged immediately.

Tyres

Tread depth across the full width of each tyre (the legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters), sidewall condition, pressures, and a look at uneven wear patterns that might point to alignment or suspension problems.

Lights & signals

Headlights (dip and main beam), indicators, brake lights, fog lights, reverse lights and registration plate lamps. Alignment is checked visually and any blown bulbs or cracked lenses are noted.

Wipers & washers

Wiper blade condition on both the front and rear screens, washer fluid level and jet alignment. Torn blades or empty washer bottles are MOT failures, so catching them early saves a retest.

Fluid levels

Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid and screen wash are all checked and topped up where possible. Low fluid levels can indicate leaks or overdue servicing.

Battery

Terminal condition, corrosion, secure mounting and a voltage or load test where equipment allows. A weak battery is the single most common reason for a breakdown call-out, especially in winter.

Suspension

Visual inspection of shock absorbers, springs, bushes and anti-roll bar links. The technician checks for leaking dampers, broken springs, excessive play and any knocking noises when the car is bounced on the ramp.

Steering

Steering rack, column, track rod ends and CV boots are inspected for wear, play and damage. Excessive free play at the wheel or a clunking sound on full lock are common findings.

When to book one

Five times a safety check is worth every penny.

Buying a used car

A pre-purchase safety check is one of the smartest things you can do before handing over money for a used car. It gives you an independent view of the vehicle's condition and real negotiating power if issues are found. Far cheaper than discovering worn brakes or a tired battery after you have already signed.

Before a long journey

Driving from London to Edinburgh or heading to the continent for a holiday? A quick safety check before you set off covers the items most likely to leave you stranded: tyres, brakes, battery, coolant, lights. Peace of mind for the price of a tank of fuel.

After winter

Salt, potholes, cold starts and short trips take a toll. Spring is a good time to check tyre condition, battery health and suspension for pothole damage. Many garages run seasonal safety check offers in March and April.

Between MOTs

Your MOT is a snapshot of one day. Twelve months is a long time, and plenty can wear in between. A mid-year safety check catches developing problems before they become MOT failures or, worse, a safety risk on the road.

New driver confidence

If you have just passed your test and bought your first car, a safety check gives you a clear picture of what condition the car is really in. The technician can walk you through the report and explain anything you are unsure about.

Understanding the differences

Safety check vs MOT vs service.

These three things overlap in what they look at, but they serve very different purposes. Here is a plain-English breakdown so you know which one you actually need.

A safety check complements both the MOT and the service. It does not replace either of them.

What happens next

If something is found, it's your call.

A safety check is not a sales pitch for repair work. The technician inspects, records and reports. That is where their obligation ends unless you ask them to go further.

Your report will categorise every item as good, advisory (worth monitoring or budgeting for) or needs attention (should be dealt with before it becomes a safety risk or an MOT failure). Advisory items do not need immediate action, but they are worth knowing about.

If repair work is recommended, the garage will quote for it separately. You are under no obligation to have the work done at the same garage. You can take the report, compare quotes on BookMyGarage, get a second opinion, or simply file it and revisit the item at your next service.

Keeping your safety check reports builds a documented history of the car's condition over time. That is valuable when selling, renewing insurance, or settling any dispute about the state of a vehicle at a given point.

Written report

Every item inspected, every finding recorded. Yours to keep whether you repair or not.

No work without your approval

Nothing is repaired or replaced without a separate quote and your explicit approval.

Repair is optional

Use any garage you like for the work. The report is yours, not tied to the inspecting garage.

Typical costs

What you can expect to pay.

A standalone vehicle safety check in the UK typically costs between £25 and £50, depending on the garage, the number of inspection points and whether the car goes on a ramp. Some garages charge a flat fee regardless of vehicle size. Others adjust slightly for larger vehicles or 4x4s where access takes a little longer.

Many garages include a complimentary safety check when you book a full or major service or an MOT. The car is already on the ramp and the technician is already looking, so the extra time is minimal. If you are booking a service anyway, always ask whether a safety check is bundled in, because it often is.

At these prices, a safety check is one of the cheapest forms of motoring peace of mind you can buy. Compare that to the cost of a roadside breakdown, a failed MOT retest, or the risk of buying a used car with hidden problems. Prevention really is cheaper than cure.

Standalone check

£25 - £50

Booked on its own. Takes 20-30 minutes, includes a written report and no obligation to repair.

Bundled with a service

Often free

Many garages include a safety check at no extra cost when you book a full service, major service or MOT.

Common questions

Vehicle safety check FAQs

Is a vehicle safety check the same as an MOT?
No. An MOT is a legal roadworthiness test required by law for vehicles over three years old. A safety check is a voluntary, visual multi-point inspection you can book at any time. It covers many of the same areas (brakes, tyres, lights, suspension) but it is not a legal requirement and does not produce an MOT certificate. Think of it as a health check between MOTs.
How long does a vehicle safety check take?
Most garages complete a standard safety check in 20 to 30 minutes. If the car is already on the ramp for other work (a service or tyre change, for example), it can be even quicker because the technician already has access to the underside.
Do I need to leave the car all day?
Not usually. Because the check is visual and non-invasive, most garages offer a while-you-wait option. You can sit in the waiting area with a coffee and be back on the road within half an hour. Some garages also offer collection and delivery if you prefer.
Will the garage fix anything they find?
Not without your say-so. You will receive a written report listing anything the technician flagged, categorised by urgency. If work is needed, the garage will quote for it separately and you decide whether to go ahead, get a second opinion, or compare quotes elsewhere on BookMyGarage.
Can I get a safety check on a brand-new car?
You can, though there is rarely much to find on a new car still under its first three years. Where a safety check really earns its keep is on used cars (especially private purchases), older vehicles between MOTs, and cars about to cover a long motorway journey.
Is the check covered by my service plan or warranty?
A standalone safety check is not usually included in a manufacturer service plan, but many garages bundle a free safety check when you book a full or major service. Check the individual garage listing on BookMyGarage to see what is included in the price.
What paperwork do I get afterwards?
You will receive a written or digital report detailing every item inspected, its condition (good, advisory, or needs attention), and recommended next steps. Keep the report. It is useful evidence if you are selling the car or settling a dispute with a used-car dealer.
How much does a vehicle safety check cost?
A standalone safety check typically costs between £25 and £50 depending on the garage and how many points they inspect. Many garages include a basic safety check free of charge when you book a service or MOT at the same time.
